FAQs
How long will it take to become certified and have a child placed in my home?
Certification, on average, will take up to 3 months. A portion of the training is self-directed, so that part will depend on the speed in which you are able to complete online modules, and any adaptations to the home that may be required (such as making sure all smoke detectors are working, fire extinguishers are present, etc…)
Why are children in foster care?
The reason a child may be in foster care varies, but the most fundamental reason is that their family is experiencing turmoil. It is common that a child is removed from a home due to findings of abuse, neglect, and/or exploitation of the child or anything else that may make it unsafe for the child to remain in the home.
How does a child enter into foster care?
When suspicions or allegations of abuse, neglect, or exploitation are reported, Child Protective Services (CPS) will investigate to determine the safety of the child. If it is determined that the child is in danger, CPS will relocate the child, first searching for a relative, then working to find a foster home for the child if a relative is unable to take the child.
What are the ages of children in foster care?
All ages. But most often, we see teenagers or younger children with sibling groups. We need families who are willing to embrace the joys and challenges of teens, or who would like to help in keeping siblings from being separated from one another.
How long will a foster child stay in my home?
There are many factors that may impact the length of time a child is in your care. The average foster child is in a home for six to eighteen months. It depends on the willingness of the biological family to work on their case plan and the determination of the team on when the case plan has been fulfilled.
